On my last morning in Key West I woke up to a beautiful sunrise and warm temperatures. I immediately grabbed my bike and pedaled 5 blocks away from my hotel to see what was open on this lazy Monday morning. I soon found a bike stall, chained up the B Ride , and began to walk around the quiet, sober streets of Key West.
The streets were empty as she swept the sidewalk in front of the Key West Pretzel Maker Stand. I couldn't help but notice her bright yellow shorts and super bright blonde hair. Just as bright was her bubbly personality. As I passed the stand she looked up cheerfully to say “Good Morning”.
She went behind the counter asking me “what can I get you dear?” It was already above 80 and humid so I gladly asked for something cold to drink. Pointing at the dewy frozen lemonade machine I replied “Please give me the biggest you got!”
As she was pouring my pint of frozen lemonade she asked me where I was from. And in that moment we talked and were friends. How I had recently moved to NY from Hawai’i and how her and her “husband have a house in North Carolina up in the sticks” and how much I miss Hawai’i and that the Keys feel so similar and she agreed that North Carolina is so beautiful but you can never go back. How she loves the vibe and open mindedness of Key West and how friendly everyone is that comes here! She smiled so perfectly for this captured moment that as I said thank you and walked away with my now melted lemonade, I turned and said “You are exactly the reason I love this place!”
